all alone - May 2008

Breathing red,
breathing pain
breathe in now
once again.
The river's red
swells 'cross the sky
the questioning
I wonder why?
All alone
everyday
colours change
but alone I stay
while the west
the summer sets
in my heart
I can't forget.
I'm breathing red
while fading black
eyes growing dim
you call me back
back to my bed
all alone
in the hospital
all alone.

What is breath? - May 2008

What is breath?
Not the air now within
now without,
The glass is not the water
nor even the sky the air.
I cannot won all that is in me,
passes through me.
The breath is the action
and the actor,
it is the movement of muscles,
diaphragm, that fills lungs
then empties them.
To focus on the gases
is to miss the breath,
and mistake it's freedom
for ourselves.
We are the breath's tension,
we are it's weakness, shallowness.
The tide of our oceans
not the waters.
When we find and focus on breath,
it is ourselves we find.

Light - May 2008

What is awareness?
like a light shining upon
wherever we direct it,
sometimes diffused and distant,
sometimes like a pinpoint.
From where does it shine?
follow back along it's light
to what source?
It shines not from the eyes
nor even the head at all,
though this is often illuminated
by it.
Can a light shine at itself?
Can a light have no source?

Reflection - May 2008

Seen in a reflection,
my own eyes,
do they gaze back?
Am I seen by my image?
Though what I see is self
I see it as other,
I am but one
without reflection.

Blond girl runs by - May 2008

Blond girl runs by,
older as she gets closer.
Where does she run to
or what from?
Her mind caught by quickly
beating heart rhymes.
Where did she go,
while I looked down
writing.
On to another road
and on.

Muses - May 2008

Without a muse,
it amuses me to remember
women I knew
who inspired books full
of verse and prose
heart-rendered raptures.
What was I yearning for?
Today I love and am loved,
and see beauty in clarity.
Have I grown up or
will I ever again
be so confused?

Late May sun - May 2008

Soft sunlight dreams
in between
the rolling rubber wheels
and growling.
Counting minutes,
recalling fondly
and ever yet breathing,
relaxed in this daze of late May sun.
Warmer in the car
behind a lense,
regarding the moment
smiling back.
